June/July 2005:

The west coast tour with Karl Blau and Nate Ashley (and Karl's daughter Ciel) was absolutely fantastic. the quartet (ciel played harmonica and sang on quite a few evenings) played ten shows over two days and got some good hangout time in with Brian Malloy and Family and Kyle Fields of Little Wings at the Malloy compound in Oceanside, CA. Lots of surfing and good times. There were some amazing jams sessions but unfortunately nothing got recorded. damn. maybe next time. Dave finally stood up on a surfboard and rode the thing. Alright. The shows were great and people really came out. Dave managed to put together some pretty close to done mixes of 13 songs on a limited edition tour CD which he titled "13 songs that may or may not be on the next gift machine album 2005". So far the response has been really great. Thanks again to everyone who came out and made the tour so much fun.

The fourth annual what the heck fest went off without a hitch and was quite a blast. Somewhere between a family reunion and a revival meeting everyone is still glowing from the event.

Dave and Nate Ashley are planning a big two month monster tour of the country in october and november. i you would like to see these two in your town please e-mail dave at studio@departmentofsafety.com.

Dave has also been playing a ton of shows by himself just for fun. There was show at Bay Street in Bellingham with Dame Dulce and a really fun house show with the Graves and Nate Ashley in Portland. Dave has been sitting in for Karl Blau on the drums as well and played some shows in Seattle and Anacortes. There is a show at the business in Anacortes with Mount Eerie and friends from Santa Cruz on August 20th if anyone is interested.

April/May 2005:

oh the spring. sunset barbeques and hikes through the hills. Lovely. What a crazy month. Dave has been recording like crazy, both new stuff and finishing touches for the recordings he has been working on for the last year. In addition he has been playing tons of shows: A mini tour with Karl Blau and Dame Dulce, Drums for Mount Eerie at the department of safety (this show is going to be release on pwelverum and sun as "Nobody's Perfect"), and preparing for a west coast tour with Karl Blau and Nate Ashley in June. Wow. On top of this planning for what the heck fest has begun and so has lake swimming season. alright for anacortes springtime.

February/March 2005:

Busy busy busy. Feeling inspired by the spring Dave has been spending a good portion of the last few month writing and recording some new material and putting the recordings he was working on temporarily on hold. "you have to go with it when it is there," says Dave. Some of the new songs were heard at a show at the department of safety in Anacortes with Dame Dulce and all who attended said it was a beautiful show. The gift machine performed as a 5 piece (six piece for the final number) and included the always wonderful Bryce Weech on drums and bass, Rachel Satterfield (dos booker and inhouse poet) on keyboards, Darrin Matthies, and Alex Parrish and Angela Seguel from Dame Dulce on guitar and voice, respecitively. Fun stuff.

January/December 2005:
----------------------------------

Dave took a much need winter vacation to hang out with Mr. Brian Malloy and family (welcome to the world lovely newborn Estella) in lovely Carlsbad Village, CA. Surfing, swimming with dolphins, Laker games and good vibes followed. There exists a tape of one nights worth of improve music between the two Amigo cohorts which Dave swears is the genesis for the next gift machine record. What about the stuff he's been working on? "It's really, really close, for real this time," says Dave. "I have ten songs that i feel really good about. I'm just going through and trying to put the icing on it. My plan is try and have all of this stuff mixed by the end of March and just see what happens. I've got a bunch of new songs coming, too, that might sneak on or just become the next record, I'm not sure yet." When will this stuff be available to the public? "Um, I don't know...there's a few labels that I'm going to send this stuff to and we will see what happens. I think I will at least have an something together for this year's What the Heck Fest". What does it sound like? "I hate that question. Why did you ask me that? um, let's see, it's less 'rockin' then the last album and more spacey. I play a lot more piano, but there are also way more guitar solos then the last record. It's still pretty catchy. I really like the 'sound' of this one, i've really learned a ton lately. Personally, i think it blows the last stuff out of the water. I am way less sick of this stuff then i was at the end of the last record. There is still plenty of time for me to get sick of it i guess....".

Har Har Dave.
About time for some new gift machine stuff, we say...

Dave has also been recording a million bands at his Vibe Control Studio at the Department of Safety, including the Jesus Chords and the Maldives from Seattle. Good stuff indeed. If you are interested in the studio, e-mail Dave at studio@departmentofsafety.com or check out the Department of Safety website at www.departmentofsafety.com.

November/December 2004:

So close. Dave took a break from recording for a couple weeks at the beginning of Nov. to take a little breather and prevent burnout. Recording resumed at a diligent pace for the rest of the year. Steve Moore (Laura Veirs Tortured Soul, general swell fella) and his brother came and played some horns with the Karl Blau with incredible results. Steve also played some amazing honky tonk piano on a different tune (long live Nicky Hopkins). Old friend and gift machiner Bryce Weech came and played on some a few tracks as well. There are some more plans to record with him in the future. Dave let some rough mixes sneak out to some friends and the reaction has been pretty amazing...

Dave also recorded the amazing Anacortes High School Band Squid Vs. Shark (with and average age of 14.7 years). The record sounds really great and should be available soon.

September/October 2004:
----------------------------------

Dave has been busy, busy, busy recording the new gift machine record. Staying up til six in the morning recording and sleeping in til 3pm. Dave's subconscious is getting splattered all over the tape....Some new basic tracks were cut with brother Darrin and James Moffit in September as well as a few tracks where all the instruments were played by Dave. In addition, 10 tracks for Karl Blau's reworking of the magnificant "Dark Magic Sea" were recorded at Vibe Control with guests including Laura Veirs, Steve Moore, Alex and Eddie Blau, and more. Karl's October issue of KelpMonthly "See Saw" was a preview of these recordings. It is really shaping up to be something wonderful. More soon....

July/August 2004:
----------------------------------

Holy smokes, Batman. Dave was in 6 bands for What-the-Heck Fest: the gift machine, Dame Dulce, Amigo, the Crabs, Nate Ashley and Brian Elliot. Damn. In the beginning weeks of July he also finished the Burl and Amigo records (coming soon to the KYO store. Excellent records. Buy them for you and your friends). The fest was super fun and probably the best ever. The gift machine set was loose but enjoyable (jam band vibrations). Darrin and James played along with Brian Malloy, Karl Blau, and Nate Ashley jumping in and contributing various instruments and voices. Three more brand new songs were played. Post fest Dave recorded 10 new Dame Dulce songs at Vibe Control, mostly live and featuring the same line up as What-the-Heck Fest. He then took the train to San Diego to visit Brian Malloy on a surfing pilgrimage and music adventure. Many songs were finished and new songs written, including about 7 new tunes co-written with Malloy. Sweet. California sunshine. mmm. Dave is planning on recording and playing on Karl Blau's new album, a reworking of the excellent "Dark Magic Sea", and mastering Nate Ashely's new album "Liminal Sea" in the final weeks of August at Vibe Control. Dave is itching to record all the new stuff he has been finishing and plans on focusing on finishing the new gift machine album in Sept./Oct. We will keep you posted. yeah.

May/June 2004:
----------------------------------

Dave has really started to dig into the new gift machine record more seriously. He has been recording diligently with James Moffit and his brother Darrin at Vibe Control. 10 songs have been recorded and nearly finished and more are coming soon. They performed some of the new material as a trio at the Department of Safety in May in everyone who attended said it was an amazing show. Dave had a fever and really let loose. Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock. Seriously. Well no LSD, but a fever can go a long way. What-the-Heck Fest planning is limiting some of the creative fun, but we are really looking forward to the third annual fest. The finishing touches are also being put on the Amigo and Burl records. Slow Beard is being postponed until after the fest and the new Dame Dulce and Gift Machine records are finished. Look for Dave and Alex on each other's respective records, though.

March/April 2004:
----------------------------------

Dave has been hard at work late at night with Brian finishing the Amigo album before Brian and Bronwyn move back to San Diego. It is so good. Brian is an off the cuff genius. Red Bull/vodka. We are really excited about this record. Dave has also been starting to record some new gift machine material with James Moffit, formerly of solo, Tugboat, and now Mouseheart factor fame, playing on drums. Also work on the Slow Beard (Dave and Alex from Dame Dulce's band) album has continued at a more rapid pace then before. In addition Dave has recorded and played on some Mount Eerie and Thanksgiving recordings and recorded and album for the San Juan Island come Seattle band the Jesus Chords, mastered Nate Ashely's new science fiction soundtrack album, and started a record for old school Anacortes favorites, Burl, at Vibe Control Studio. Busy, Busy, Busy.....

January/February 2004:
----------------------------------

Dave just moved into the Department of Safety and started a studio there called Vibe Control. Yeah! The first project so far besides sautering tons of cables and building and rebuilding shelves with Flint is the new Amigo album with Brian Malloy. Yeah. More to come...

November/December 2003:
----------------------------------

Dave just returned from a month long tour with Karl Blau. They drove all over the country, playing 26 shows in 27 days and had a really amazing time. Karl's partner Callie and his 3 year old daughter Ciel also came along for the ride. Ciel danced onstage almost every night they played. The fall in New England truly is gorgeous. They played outside in the dark under a tree in Danbury, Connecticut and leaves were falling on them as they went. Everyone started dreaming the same dreams and thinking the same thoughts and finishing each other sentences and singing songs that were stuck in the other people's heads without knowing they were the songs that were stuck in the other people's heads. Thanks to everyone who helped set up the shows and came out and watched and help support the traveling minstrels.

Dave is recording the new gift machine album with his brother Darrin and a whole host of other guest musicians. It will be truly fancy pants, we promise. It is scheduled for release sometime in the spring of 2004.

The gift machine will be taking a little break from live shows until the new year so they can finish the album. They will be hitting the road again in March, April and May so check KNW-YR-OWN for more details.
